A konceptuális fotózás egy művészeti megközelítés, amely nem csupán a képek rögzítéséről szól, hanem az ötletek, a koncepciók és az üzenetek kifejezéséről is. Ez a művészeti irányzat a fotózást az elméleti gondolkodás és az esztétikai megközelítés részévé teszi.
A konceptuális fotózás gyökerei az 1960-as években keresendők, amikor az avantgárd művészek új utakat keresve próbálták kibővíteni a fotózás határait.
Az 1970-es években a konceptuális fotózás virágzani kezdett, és olyan művészek váltak ismertté, mint Cindy Sherman és Jeff Wall. Sherman például számos szerepben és szituációban önmagát örökítette meg, kérdéseket vetve fel az identitás és a társadalmi sztereotípiák körül. Jeff Wall pedig olyan óriási, színes fényképeket készített, amelyek szinte egy-egy film jelenetét idézték meg.
Az 1980-as években a digitális technológia megjelenése új lehetőségeket nyitott meg a konceptuális fotózásban. A fotósok most már számítógépes szerkesztéssel és manipulációval is kifejezhetik ötleteiket. Az elképzelt jelenetek és a digitális trükkök lehetővé tették olyan képek létrehozását, amelyek még soha nem léteztek a valóságban.
A konceptuális fotózásnak nincs egy meghatározott stílusa vagy technikai megközelítése. Ez a művészeti ág azt hangsúlyozza, hogy a gondolatok és az ötletek éppoly fontosak, mint a technika vagy az eszközök. A konceptuális fotózásban a fotósok az elgondolkodtató üzeneteket, a gesztusokat, a szimbólumokat és a narratívákat használják fel a nézők elgondolkodtatására és inspirálására.

Gyakran használnak szimbólumokat és metaforákat, ezek a vizuális elemek segítenek a gondolatok és érzelmek kifejezésében, és mélyebb jelentést adnak a képeknek. A kreativitás és a kísérletezés játssza a főszerepet.
